Methodology

CO₂ utilisation

CO₂ utilisation involves usage of the captured CO₂ in products or processes or the conversion of the CO₂ in carbon or carbon compounds which are then used in products and processes.

About the project

CarbonCure is an engineering technology company that is licensing its technology to cure CO2 into concrete production. CarbonCure sells its equipment, retrofitting manufacturers' concrete plants. CarbonCure allows plants to be connected to a CO₂ tank stored onsite and automatically injects a precise dosage of CO₂ into the concrete during mixing. CarbonCure software is able to track CO₂ injection and accurately monitor mineralization over time. CarbonCure is sharing half of its offset sales with manufacturers as a way to incentivize the adoption of the CarbonCure technology and accelerate the decarbonisation of cement.

Sustainable development goals

The project supports 4 goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Industry, innovation and infrastructureSustainable cities and communitiesResponsible consumption and productionClimate action

12 - Responsible consumption and production

CarbonCure’s technology provides GHG benefits in two ways: 1) by mineralizing captured CO₂ in concrete products, and 2) by reducing significantly carbon emissions through the reduction of cementitious materials made possible by the strength benefit of the mineralized CO₂. The total GHG benefits are net of any additional emissions that occur through the use of our technology to create these GHG benefits

13 - Climate action

The cement industry alone is responsible for about a quarter of all industry CO2 emissions. Technology innovations such as CarbonCure's carbon-cured concrete can contribute significantly to mitigating emissions. Further, the monetization of carbon credits could prove to be an effective incentive for manufacturers to be deploying CarbonCure's technology at scale to cover the "green premium" of the new product
