Methodology
Forest conservation and restoration (REDD+)
Protecting endangered forests from illegal tree cutting or planting trees in areas that have already been deforested.
About the project
The Madre de Dios Amazon REDD Project consists of forest conservation activities across 100,000 hectares of rainforest located in the Peruvian Amazon. The project is designed around two sustainable timber harvesting operations which have the goal to preserve and improve the forest management of a forest which is at threat of deforestation and degradation, as a result of increased access from the recent construction of a nearby inter-oceanic highway.

Sustainable development goals
The project supports 5 goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
15 - Life on land
The project is situated across almost 100,000 hectares of a highly diverse parcel of Peruvian rainforest. The dense forest covers a hilly terrain with most areas being completely inaccessible - a trait which is to be continued by the project such that incursions by illegal loggers are well-controlled. The project area also borders the Manu National Park, functionally extending the habitat for over 120 species of tree and over 300 avian species, some of which are IUCN listed.
12 - Responsible consumption and production
Set across two sustainable forestry concessions, the project aims to ensure timber harvesting is controlled and sustainable. Harvesting practices are FSC certified and employ management plans that control the species, age, and volume of timber removed. This business element of the project allows the local region to derive economic value from the forest's resources while ensuring its viability for future generations.
