Methodology
Forest conservation and restoration (REDD+)
Protecting endangered forests from illegal tree cutting or planting trees in areas that have already been deforested.
About the project
The Southern Cardamom REDD+ initiative is a 445,000-hectare forest conservation project in one of the world's most valuable biodiversity hotspots, supporting over 50 IUCN threatened species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. The project aims to avoid an estimated 115 million tons of carbon emissions over its lifetime and is implementing interventions that look to involve the community, including improved access to education, agricultural intensification, and expanding the region's ecotourism.
Project impact to date
Sustainable development goals
The project supports 15 goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
4 - Quality education
The region has traditionally had low-levels of education as children are often required to work on family farms during the day. This contributes to the perpetuation of a cycle of poverty, which also furthers deforestation. As such, the project has the ambitious aim of ensuring education for all children through primary and secondary school. Other than support for educational facilities, the initiative will offer a scholarship fund to support middle and high school students in the project area.
15 - Life on land
Among the intended benefits of the project, one of the most significant is the conservation of highly important ecosystems and individual species. The avoided deforestation will support the habitat for at least 52 IUCN-listed threatened species, and 17 endangered and critically endangered species, including the Asian Elephant, and Hairy-nosed Otter. The project also includes part of the Cardamom Mountains Rainforest Ecosystem, one of the 200 most important conservation hotspots in the world.
