White Paper: Abatable’s Quality Framework

Published: 19 Jul 2022
Last updated: 20 Jan 2023

Abatable’s quality framework is designed to provide insight into a project’s quality claims while avoiding the oversimplification of using a single rating score. It is informed by a deep engagement with various sectors of the global carbon market, as well as guidance from a highly-experienced technical advisory board.

We believe the outcome of our quality assessment and framework is a comprehensive, insightful, and readily deployed tool that can guide corporate buyers and investors in the carbon procurement process and the identification of quality projects. It is also designed to help carbon project developers and inform their thinking about their own projects and track record, and compare those with other similar projects developed to date.

Why does the world need another quality framework?

As our team reviewed the existing frameworks, we felt that no framework adopted a comprehensive risk-oriented approach to the assessment of quality.

Why is a risk approach needed?

We know that operating and implementing carbon offsetting projects is a risky business, and understanding the risks allows us to anticipate quality considerations during implementation. Quality frameworks and initiatives to date have not paid enough attention to who is behind the project implementation - the project developer itself. This is one way in which we think our framework is distinct, in that it is designed as a two-level quality and risk assessment - at the developer and project level, with the appropriate importance given to counterparty risk and relevant experience of the project developer.
