The telecoms operator has launched a four-year procurement process with Abatable, seeking 24,000 tonnes of carbon removals from nature-based and engineered projects across the UK.
VodafoneThree has opened a request for proposals (RFP) for UK-based carbon removal projects to support its climate strategy, run by environmental market procurement, intelligence and advisory provider Abatable.
VodafoneThree is seeking 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) of removals, deliverable over the next four years (2027-2030), with the process open to UK carbon projects from 12 August.
Abatable will use its carbon procurement platform to collect project information to screen and evaluate responses against VodafoneThree's criteria, with successful projects to be selected in Q4 2026.
A mix of carbon removal projects
The RFP will run in two parallel tracks covering UK nature-based and engineered carbon removal projects. The first track will cover a range of methodologies, including nature-based and emerging hybrid and technological approaches to atmospheric carbon dioxide removal, while the second will focus on new woodland creation in the UK through the UK government-backed carbon standard, the Woodland Carbon Code.
Eligible approaches include nature-based removals such as afforestation, soil carbon, and nature restoration, alongside engineered and hybrid removals such as biochar, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, and direct air capture with storage, subject to integrity, durability and delivery schedules.
Submissions will be evaluated based on location, MRV approaches and ability to deliver carbon removal annually out to 2030. VodafoneThree is keen to support projects with strong biodiversity, nature restoration and social impact co-benefits.
A procurement platform geared for developers
UK-based projects can submit through Abatable’s environmental market procurement platform. The platform has been custom-designed to be user-friendly for carbon project developers. Rather than answering a generic questionnaire, each developer will see specific qualification questions for their track. The RFP also includes an optional 2031 to 2033 window, so developers with pipeline volumes outside the immediate four years can also participate by flagging future opportunities.
Given VodafoneThree’s business focus, developers are encouraged when applying to indicate whether connectivity, internet of things, and data services could strengthen the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of their projects.
